Chemistry Chapter
Objectives of the Chemistry Chapter
The key objective of the Chemistry Chapter is to enhance the capacity
and capability of teachers in the learning and teaching of Chemistry through
(i) deepening the pedagogical content knowledge of teachers for quality
student learning;
(ii) building a culture of teacher-led professionalism and pride in the teaching fraternity; and
(iii) championing professional collaboration and networked learning among teachers.
Master Teachers, sometimes together with Lead or Senior Teachers, organise and facilitate professional workshops in various areas, for example:
-
Assessment Literacy
-
Inquiry-based Learning
-
Differentiated Instruction
-
Modelling Instructions
-
Question-based Instruction
-
Identifying and Addressing Alternative Conceptions
From the workshops, effective classroom practices are surfaced and contextualised to the needs of the Chemistry teachers. Through collaborative learning, the teacher could deepen his or her professional knowledge and practices and respond more effectively to the complexity of the classroom. The workshops that are run by Chemistry Master Teachers often adopt a 5Cs Approach (Curiosity, Comprehension, Convincing, Contextualisation, and Changed practice) where teachers are closely guided into transforming what they have learnt to good and effective classroom practices.
The Chapter organises a diverse range of professional learning activities to cater to different learning preference and interest:
-
Learning journeys to industries and Institutes of Higher Learning
-
Professional conversations with overseas and local educators
-
Designed and Interest-based Networked Learning Communities (NLC) e.g. O- and A-level Practical NLC, Visible Thinking Routine NLC, Microscale (Secondary), etc.
-
NLC-led workshops e.g. Learning to write Data-based Questions (O-level), Enhancing Students’ Conceptual Understanding of Chemistry through Microscale Experiments Workshop, etc.
-
Role-based Learning Sessions for e.g. Professional Learning Sessions for BTs, ST-LT Network Learning, etc.
-
Masterclasses by Experts
-
Chemistry Learning Day (biennial)
