Chemistry Chapter
Objectives of the Chemistry Chapter
The Chemistry Chapter aims to enhance teachers' capacity and capability in Chemistry education through three core areas:
-
deepening pedagogical content knowledge for quality student learning;
-
building a culture of teacher-led professionalism and pride within the teaching fraternity; and
-
championing professional collaboration and networked learning among teachers.
Master Teachers, often collaborating with Lead or Senior Teachers, organise and facilitate professional workshops in various areas, for example:
-
Assessment Literacy
-
Inquiry-based Learning
-
Differentiated Instruction
-
Modelling Instructions
-
Question-based Instruction
-
e-Pedagogy
-
STEM education
These workshops serve as platforms for surfacing effective classroom practices, which are then contextualised to meet the specific needs of Chemistry teachers. Through this collaborative learning approach, teachers deepen their professional knowledge and practices whilst developing more effective responses to classroom complexities. The workshops typically employ a 5Cs Approach—Curiosity, Comprehension, Convincing, Contextualisation, and Changed Practice—providing close guidance as teachers transform their learning into effective classroom applications.
To accommodate varying learning preferences and interests, the Chapter also organises a comprehensive range of professional learning opportunities:
-
Learning journeys to industries and Institutes of Higher Learning
-
Professional conversations with overseas and local educators
-
Designed and Interest-based Networked Learning Communities (NLC) e.g. O- and A-level Practical NLC, Visible Thinking Routine NLC, Microscale (Secondary), etc.
-
NLC-led workshops e.g. Learning to write Data-based Questions (O-level), Fostering Students’ Inquiry Skills through Microscale Experiments Workshop, etc.
-
Role-based Learning Sessions, e.g. Professional Learning Sessions for BTs, ST-LT Network Learning, etc.
-
Masterclasses
-
Chemistry Learning Day (biennial)
