Mr Yap Boon Chien
Profile
An Engineering Graduate who joined the education service in 1998, Mr Yap started his teaching career as a Physics and Mathematics teacher in Chung Cheng High School (Branch). He specialised in Physics teaching in Hai Sing Catholic School since 2004, Tanjong Katong Girls’ School since 2009, Changkat Changi Secondary since 2021, and Tampines Secondary School since 2024. He was appointed Senior Teacher (ST) in 2006, Lead Teacher (LT) in 2011 and installed as Master Teacher in 2016.
As a Master Teacher, Mr Yap is a pedagogical leader and a mentor in a wider education community. It is his desire to grow a fraternity of Teacher Leaders with a passion of educating our students to enjoy learning and put in their personal best to contribute to society. Mr Yap makes innnovative use of gadgets, demonstrations and concrete experiences to draw his students into the abstract concepts of Physics. His use of object lessons enhances student engagement and arouses their curiosity. Mr Yap holds firm belief in the correlation between student motivation and learning; he role models and instill values such as resilience in learning through motivational talks and regular dialogues.
His contributions to the education fraternity at school, cluster, zonal and national levels have been recognised with numerous awards, including the President’s Award for Teachers (PAT) in 2012. He is also the recipient of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Science Teacher Award 2012, Nanyang Outstanding Young Alumni Award 2013 and 2010 winner of the Crescendas Medal and Prize for Outstanding Physics Teacher (Secondary Schools) awarded by the Institute of Physics, Singapore.
