Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence
The establishment of the Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence at Yusof Ishak Secondary School was officially announced by Mr Heng Swee Keat, Former Minister for Education, on 23 September 2015.
This new model of authentic onsite professional development of teachers embodies Mr Yusof Ishak’s pioneering spirit and his convictions that education enables individuals and all communities to progress. The CTLE focuses on growing teachers who in turn will grow students and the next generation.
During the launch of CTLE@YISS, Master Teachers and staff from NIE and MOE divisions collaborated with teachers from Yusof Ishak Secondary School to demonstrate various pedagogies to the teaching fraternity.
1. Physics Inquiry on Sound through Engaging and Effective Demonstrations
In this Masterclass, Mr Yap Boon Chien, Master Teacher/Physics, and Dr Charles Chew, Principal Master Teacher/Physics, used engaging and effective Physics demonstrations to teach a class of Secondary 3 students of Yusof Ishak Secondary School on the topic of Sound and its Real-world Applications. The lesson was observed by in-service teachers and pre-service teachers.
2. CCE Masterclass: The Leader Within - In the Shoes of Others
The lesson, "In the Shoes of Others", based on the theme The Leader Within, was co-conducted by Mdm Ong Yun Ping, HOD/CCE, YISS, and Mr Tan Cher Chong, Master Teacher/Educational Support. In the observation classroom, Mr Osman Abdullah, Master Teacher/Character and Citizenship Education, highlighted to teacher observers the CSI strategies (Clarifying, Sensitising and Influencing) adopted by the teachers to clarify students’ thoughts and feelings, sensitise them by inviting them to put themselves in the shoes of others, and influence them to make the right decisions.
3. Mathematics Masterclass: Learning Experience on Properties of Chords of a Circle
Mr Tan Weicun, Beginning Mathematics Teacher from Yusof Ishak Secondary School, and Mdm Low Leng, Master Teacher/Mathematics, co-conducted a lesson on the Properties of Circles – Chords of a Circle. Participants comprising pre-service teachers, experienced teachers and teacher leaders observed the use of Talk Moves - a facilitation technique for classroom discussions - in a Secondary 3 Mathematics classroom.
